DOLOMITES
The Dolomites form a globally unique mountain world and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 26, 2009. Of the nine affected sites, there are four in the Trentino and are sometimes the reason for the unique beauty of the region. They offer a variety of possibilities for alpinists and skiers. The Trentino Dolomites include the Brentadolomites in the Amadello Brento Natural Park, the Latemar Catinaccio Group, the Pale di San Martino group and finally the Marmolata, the Queen of the Dolomites.
The Brentadolomites, a part of the Rhaetian Alps, owe their name to the scientist Deodat de Dolomieu, who decoded the composition of the dolomite rock, a compound of calcium carbonate and magnesium. The mountain group covers an area of 436 kmĀ² and is part of the natural park Adamello-Brenta. The Brentadolomites are an excellent destination for hikers and mountaineers and they offer fantastic landscapes and numerous hiking trails with accommodation and mountain huts.
